Report Date: 31st July 2012

Report Title: Changing Young Lives 2012

Institution: Creativity, Culture and Education

Full reference: Creativity, Culture and Education (2009) Changing Young Lives 2012. Newcastle: CCE

Summary

This is the third of CCE’s occasional summarised accounts of recent research. It offers an overview by Paul Collard of learning and current thinking inspired by the research as well as brief accounts of some key studies focusing on a range of themes, including:

  • young people, creativity and well-being (Cambridge University)
  • the assessment of creative dispositions in young people (The Centre for Real-World Learning)
  • parental involvement in education (Centre for Literacy in Primary Education)
  • the impact of creative work on the teaching workforce (NFER)
  • the contribution of creativity to school ethos (Open University) and the skills, characteristics and practices that may define the ‘additional value’ of artists working in schools (Nottingham University)

While the full reports of each study are available elsewhere on this site, this publication offers a quick introduction to the work and illustrates how the aggregated findings help to shape CCE’s approach to programme design, implementation and consultancy.

Accompanying this are a number of case studies by BOP Consulting, some new, some updated from the last summarised account of Creative Partnerships in Changing Young Lives (2009). The case studies give an insight into how Creative
Partnerships works at the micro level: looking at particular schools, individual teachers and learners, and adding a measure of granularity to the more thematic insights that come through the larger research projects.
